The First Step of a Thousand Miles...

Hello everyone,

I have made it to Edmonton! I got to the airport around 530am, and learned that United Airways is very incompetent. There was a line 30 people long, and only 2 customer service people to check everyone in. Apparently, a flight that was supposed to leave earlier that morning was cancelled, and everoyne needed to get their flights changed. So around 6:30, they opened up the automatic check in lines for all of us on the 7:30am flight (my flight). When I finally got up there, they could not find my reservation...thanks Orbitz...so luckily I brought my confirmation e-mail with me! After 20 minutes of digging, they finally gave me my boarding pass. So I ran to through airport security (don't ever do that), and got to my gate. Another stupid thing about United was that they did not assign seats in advance for this flight, so they were giving them out at the gate. I, however, had a seat number on my ticket...so I got more confused. When we finally boarded, I discovered that the seat given to me by the check in lady was First class...oh yes! If you ever get the chance, fly first class...don't pay for it, but accept a free upgrade! We had one flight attendent for 6 passengers, and got served unlimited drinks and food...so fun for a 2 hour flight! Also, the passengers were extremely entertaining, including the dentist and his DA going to Las Vegas...who talked to me the entire time!

The second flight wasn't as entertaining, as I was in Coach again, and the flight was 4 hours long. I did sit next to a very nice lady, who discussed how our education system is going down the drain, and corporal punishment needs to be brought back. I got a lot of reading done during this flight...

As we approached Edmonton, I began to get worried. Every other city I have flown into could be seen well in advance of arrival...not Edmonton. When we landed, I went through Customs, which wasn't bad, but Immigration was the long part. We had to go through a book to pick what best my occupation was similar to (I am an Educational Counselor). After getting my work permit, I exited and found my site supervisor waiting for me. We exchanged my US Dollars for Canadian Dollars (which is 1:1), and took a taxi back to the University of Alberta. It is a beautiful campus (pictures will be posted this weekend), and has very nice people. My supervisor introduced me to everyone, and after a quick meeting, I went back to my room to relax. We then went to dinner with his wife at O'Brien's, and then I returned back to my room. I was so exausted, and jetlagged I went to bed around 7pm local time (9pm EDT).

Today we are going to get my Social Insurance Number card, and get me on the payroll...more to come!
